Adults and children do not often think alike. Why would they, adults have so much more stress that they have to carry around and obviously worry much more than kids do. This stress causes adults to think about what they are doing before they are doing it while us kids have that "You only live once or YOLO" attitude all the time. What do we have to worry about anyway, besides homework and whether or not we get to watch the newest episode of our favorite T.V. shows. Many times in every child's life we may disagree with one of our parents or guardians because of this difference in thinking. I personally have gone through many situations in my life where I have not agreed with one of my parents. And I am sure that I am not the only one. One story particular, I think a lot of people can relate to.
When I was about eight, I remember distinctly walking in Scituate harbor with a bunch of my friends and all our mothers. It was about the middle of the summer and all of us were pretty hungry from a long day at the beach. All of us were whining and being annoying, just like any other eight year old. So the moms finally gave in and we all went to T.K.O Malley's for some dinner.
We all walked into the refreshing air-conditioned restaurant and waited for the hostess to seat us at our booth at the corner of the restaurant. First we all ordered our drinks, I ordered a "Shirley Temple" (as I always do). The moms were all laughing at each others "funny" stories while we all sat coloring on the pictures that every "family friendly" restaurant gives to all kids under 12 yrs-of-age to keep them entertained before the food comes out. As the waitress was walking back with our drinks we were all deciding what to order. All my friends didn't want "real" food so their mothers were letting them just get hot fudge ice cream sundaes. I wanted to do the same thing but "noooooo!!" I had to order a nutritious meal because apparently only eating junk food all the time makes you fat or something, well at least that's what my mom said. I was furious, all I wanted in life was to eat a hot fudge sundae with my friends on a hot summer night, but my mother had to crush those dreams. What did she have against happiness, I thought. Our waitress finally reached our table. Everyone ordered their food while I quietly waited for the waitress to finish rotating around the table until it was my turn to tell her what I wanted. And as each one of my friends ordered their sundaes I stared at my mom and when it was finally my turn, I looked the waitress in the eye and said "Hello my I please have a hot fudge sundae with two cherries on top, please and thank you!" The waitress wrote down my order and said she will be back with our food as soon as it is ready. My mother was looking at me with that glare you see on every mother's face when their child disobeys them. But, what was she going to do now, that's right NOTHING. I had her wrapped her around my tiny, little finger, I was so polite to our waitress that at first she didn't even know what came out of my cute little mouth. But as she was walking away to the kitchen, my mom was shocked that I actually didn't do what she had asked. The waitress, later, came back with my ice cream and I ate it up with the biggest smile on my face. Oh, but when I got home, my mother sat me down and yelled at me. She was appalled at how her sweet eight year old girl could be so sinister and sneaky. The whole time I just had a smirk on my face. It was already done, therefore she could do nothing, it was over. I got my hot fudge sundae and she would just have to deal with it!
